Court Moor school has a truly active DofE Award scheme with between 45 – 70 students participating every year. The award is open to all year 10 students, they are given the chance to apply in the summer term of year 9.
Achieving an Award will give the students skills, confidence and an edge over others when they apply for college, university or a job. Beyond their academic achievements, universities want to see evidence of so called ‘soft skills’ that the students have developed through extracurricular activities, such as communication, commitment, leadership and teamwork. The DofE Award is a fantastic way to demonstrate and evidence these skills in practice.
Each student who joins MUST complete the following in order to achieve the award:
1. Volunteering section - a service to individuals or the community
2. Physical section - to improve in an area of sport, dance or fitness
3. Skill section - to develop practical and social skills and personal interests
4. Expedition - to plan, train and complete an adventurous journey
You’ll also make a difference to other people’s lives and your community, be fitter and healthier, make new friends and have memories to last you a lifetime.
The school is responsible for training and assisting students to complete the expedition section of the award and has a team of over 10 staff involved in this. The individual participants must arrange and complete the other sections themselves. One of these sections must be undertaken for 6 months and the other two for 3 months each.
For both training and expeditions participants work in groups of 6/7 with a designated qualified leader, who is a member of the school staff. All the staff involved in the scheme are volunteers, giving up their own time after teaching to help the students. It is important to note that, as training progresses, the need for constant supervision decreases so that, by the final expedition, groups will only be met by their leaders and assessors at specific checkpoints along their planned route.
Training for the expedition is quite intensive and requires effort and time commitment.
