We welcomed Alex James, an undergraduate engineer from Surrey University, to our careers café this morning.

Alex is currently finishing the third year of his degree, which is an internship with Baker Hughes. He explained about the route he took from A levels to his degree, when he initially wanted to be a pilot, and then found he preferred to design planes. Alex quizzed the students on their knowledge about extraction of crude oil, and amazed us with some facts, such as the pressure of an oil well can be 2,000 atmospheres at a temperature of 200°C. Alex also brought along some props, including a sensor package that had been flattened by the extreme pressure in the deep sea, demonstrating some of the extreme engineering required.

Thanks to Alex for an interesting and informative talk!
