Last week, 18 students from years 9-11 attended the 24th Model United Nations hosted by Calthorpe Park School. The 18 students formed six delegations, representing the United States of America, the People’s Republic of China, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Norway and Sri Lanka.

On the Wednesday, students attended an evening session where they used their research on their country to write, sign and submit resolutions to be debated in the general assembly. Court Moor students saw success with two resolutions being submitted for debate at the general assembly. One by the United States of America and a joint resolution from Spain and Norway.

On the Friday, students arrived in formal dress ready to represent their country in the general assembly which had resolutions ranging from the dangers of artificial intelligence to promoting children’s rights to education worldwide. Spain and Norway were successful with their resolution on protecting women’s rights, being passed with a majority by the general assembly, whereas unfortunately the United States did not find many allies for their resolution regarding maritime security.

Guest speakers were Jeremy Hunt MP and Carla Denyer MP, providing pre-recorded messages, and Sir Ranil Jayawardena spoke at the close of the general assembly. This allowed students to see the different paths that people take into politics and the realities of working in local and countrywide politics.
