Years 9-11 Get Set Day
Back
Years 9, 10 and 11 have had their first Get Set day of the new academic year today. Get Set days are one of five days during the school year where students study broader aspects of the curriculum.
This Get Set day has focused on aspects of mental health challenges and friendships. Get Set days allow us to have guest speakers and special visitors in school and we have been very fortunate to have the LA based pop band as1one visit. The band are comprised of Israeli and Palestinian members, and have featured in a Paramount+ documentary about their pop music journey. as1one discussed mental health, the causes of mental health problems (stress at school, relationships etc), and who to turn to for help and the importance of speaking up. They linked how their mental health was affected by their own experiences of discrimination and how their friendships have offered support. They also discussed the importance of treating each other fairly, why diversity should be celebrated, what to do if you're being discriminated against and why it is wrong to discriminate against other people.
The group linked their messages to the differences in their personal backgrounds and why they chose harmony and friendship over animosity. The talk was very interactive and got many of our students involved. Our students conducted themselves with great maturity and positivity throughout the day and as I am writing this, I have just received the band’s feedback sharing how impressed they were with our students, their contributions and how welcome they were made to feel.
