Year 7 Normandy Trip
Back
Last Saturday, fifty year 7 students and five staff set off at 5am bound for beautiful Normandy. After a smooth and quiet journey we arrived in the picturesque town of Honfleur where students were able to practise their French for the first time and complete a work study.
On Sunday morning we visited Caen where we explored the market. Students again put their French to good use and were able to sample (and purchase) some culinary delights! We then headed to the 360 cinema at Arromanches where students watched a thought provoking film on the D-Day landings. Our final visit of the day was the American cemetery at Point d'Hoc which overlooked Omaha Beach.
We started our day on Monday visiting a British cemetery in Bayeux - a smaller cemetery than the one we visited the previous day but, nonetheless, equally thought provoking. We then visited the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Bayeux where we spent some time admiring its wonderful architecture and history. This was followed by a visit to see the mesmerising Bayeux tapestry. Pausing for a well earned rest and picnic lunch, our busy itinerary then took us to a local goat farm. Students learnt about cheese production and were also able to sample some cheese and yoghurts made on site as well as meet the goats up close and personal! Our final activity was the summer luge - staff and students all had a go and enjoyed it!
Our final day started with a visit of Pegasus Bridge, site of the first objective taken by allied troops after the Normandy Landings on June 6th 1944, before heading back to Calais for our return crossing to the UK.
We arrived back having had a lovely time, where we spoke lots of French and were able to learn about French culture and history.
